The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Learner Support Services – School Health Division (BLSS-SHD), in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH), World Health Organization (WHO), and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), shall organize this year’s celebration of the Global Handwashing Day with the theme: Our Future is at Hand – Let's Move Forward Together. This global advocacy day is celebrated every 15th of October and is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding on the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. In line with the said celebration, a one-day symposium titled Malinis na Kamay para sa Kinabukasan ng Bayan will be conducted that aims to motivate key stakeholders to promote a culture of hand hygiene by featuring best practices on encouraging handwashing behavior across different settings. To adapt to current learning modalities, the event shall feature selected videos submitted by regions. These will highlight various initiatives in the implementation of WinS Program at the school level. Further, this event shall launch the WASH O’clock campaign as a platform for public awareness, advocacy and social mobilization in selected areas.

WASH in Schools (WinS) Overview and Overview of WinS in the Light of COVID-19

In support of the operationalization of the Department of Education’s Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP), and as part of the initiatives under the DepEd COVID-19  Response and the Brigada Eskuwela 2020, the WASH in Schools Technical Working Group (WinS TWG) will be conducting a series of Webinars covering topics on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools and how it will support remote learning environment.  These shall form part of the initiatives of the Department of Education Basic Education Learner Support Services – School Health Division (BLSS-SHD) and WinS partner organizations – UNICEF, Save the Children Philippines and GIZ - under capacity building and technical support and assistance in preparation for the school opening and operations for the coming school year 2020-2021.

The WinS Webinar 1 based on the WINS Webinar Series (of 4 Webinars) has the following objectives :

1.      To conduct WASH in Schools (WinS) basic overview Of WinS in the Light of COVID-19 orientation and basic training and re-training on the WASH in Schools program of the DepEd to Division and School Coordinators and Staff including but not limited to WinS Coordinators, School Heads, Teachers.

2.      To promote WASH in Schools and encourage adaptation of WinS Behaviors and practices in remote learning, and as preparation for the physical use of schools on a limited or full capacity with compliance to DepEd Order No. 20 s.2020
